International round-up

Urbig keeps clean sheet for Germany in Greece

The German national team travelled to Thessaloniki on Sunday looking for revenge after last week's 1–0 defeat in the UEFA Nations League. Four Bayern players were in the squad to take on Greece. Konrad Laimer was in action for Austria against Erblin Osmani's Kosovo. fcbayern.com has a round-up of the games:

Urbig in fine form for Germany

Jonas Urbig made his second appearance in goal for the German national team and prevented his side from falling behind in the very first minute with a superb save on the line after a header from Greece’s Giorgos Masouras. The Bayern keeper went on to put in an assured performance throughout the rest of the match.

In front of him, Tom Bischof and Aleksandar Pavlović formed the backbone of the midfield. Bischof was back in the starting XI following his debut goal in the 2–0 win over Serbia and played until the 83rd minute. A goal by Burkardt was struck off following a VAR review due to a handball. Lennart Karl also started the game and was taken off in the second half.

Germany dominated the first half almost at will, enjoying over 75 per cent possession and registering 21 shots on goal to the Greeks’ 5 over the 90 minutes. The only thing missing from their game was a goal, although the Greeks did step up their battling spirit in the second half and, deploying a low block made it much harder for the German side to get in front of goal. The goalless draw earned Germany their fifth point, and they remain in third place in Group A.

Laimer plays the full 90 minutes for Austria

Austria, featuring Bayern defender Konrad Laimer, remain top of Group 3 in League B of the Nations League. After falling behind to a goal by Fisnik Aslani in Kosovo – where Erblin Osmani didn't feature this time round – LASK striker Christoph Lang came off the bench to equalise with five minutes left on the clock. Laimer played the full 90 minutes at left-back.

Saibari and Ndiaye both in the starting XI

Ismael Saibari and Bara Sapoko Ndiaye both also turned out for their respective national teams on Sunday. Whilst Morocco drew 1–1 (1–0) with Mali in a friendly in Tangier, Senegal secured a narrow 1–0 win over the Comoros. Saibari was in the starting XI for Morocco’s friendly and led the North African side’s line. The hosts took the lead through Abde Ezzalzouli (35’, pen.), before Gaoussou Diarra (77’) equalised for Mali. Saibari was taken off in the 65th minute. Morocco had slightly more of the play, but the draw was a fair result given the chances created.

Ndiaye played the full 90 minutes for Senegal under coach Patrick Vieira as they beat the Comoros 1–0 (1–0) in a friendly in Marseille. Iliman Ndiaye scored the only goal of the match with just five minutes gone. Ndiaye confidently organised the midfield and made a good impression.
