When Bayern Basketball kicks off the 2024/2025 season with a BBL home game at the BMW Park on September 20th (8 PM), fans will be able to welcome not only the new head coach Gordon Herbert but also five German Olympic heroes: National player Johannes Voigtmann, 31, returns to the Bundesliga after eight years abroad, having signed with the German champions for three seasons until 2027. The center spent the last two seasons with Italy's champions Milan; in Paris, the 2023 world champion, alongside Herbert and FCBB pros Niels Giffey, Oscar da Silva, Andreas Obst, and Nick Weiler-Babb, helped Germany achieve the DBB team's best-ever Olympic placement with a fourth-place finish.
Return after Eight EuroLeague Years Abroad
“I am very happy to be in Munich and to return to Germany and the Bundesliga after many years abroad,” said Johannes Voigtmann after his first visit to the BMW Park. “I will now be part of what I believe is a very exciting project at Bayern, with great potential, a new arena, a new coach, and many players I have already played with and enjoy playing with. There is also a close family connection to Munich. It all fits perfectly, and I am looking forward to this new challenge, the team, and the fans in Munich.”
Jo Voigtmann was one of the key players during the national team’s successful run under Herbert; the two have known each other for a long time from their shared years in Frankfurt. In the EuroLeague (7.9 PPG, 5 RPG), the 2.11-meter tall bronze medalist at the 2022 European Championship is approaching his 250th appearance, after spending three years each with Baskonia in Vitoria, CSKA Moscow, and most recently Olimpia Milan, where he won the Italian championship twice.

Success under Herbert, Family in Munich
“With Jo Voigtmann, we are getting a player of international caliber who not only brings a wealth of experience from his stints with top European clubs but also is a leadership figure,” said FCBB Managing Director Marko Pesic. “He has proven this not only in recent years with the national team but also at all his clubs. We are very pleased with his signing, which ensures continuity in the German positions alongside Kevin, Nick, Andi, Niels, Elias, Oscar, Ivan, and now Jo for the next two to three years.”
Voigtmann started his basketball career relatively late as a teenager in Jena. After playing in the second division there, he moved to the Skyliners, with whom he won the FIBA Europe Cup in 2016 (under Herbert) (11.7 PPG, 5.8 RPG). He made his EuroLeague debut with Baskonia, reaching the ACB Finals in 2018 and scoring 8.8 points per game in exactly 100 EuroLeague games for the Spanish team. His time in Moscow ended abruptly in March 2022 due to the Russian invasion, and his contract in Milan has now expired.
The Thuringian has played 119 games for the national team. At the 2019 World Cup, the intelligent big man was the second-highest scorer with an average of 11.4 points. He was also a key part of the successful Olympic qualification in 2020 (9.3 PPG), the bronze medal win at the 2022 European Championship (5.8/6.7 RPG), the World Cup triumph (5.4/6.3 RPG; 12 points in the final against Serbia) last year, and now at the Summer Olympics (4.5/4.3 RPG).
In the BBL, the FCBB newcomer has so far played 131 games, averaging 10.9 points and 5.3 rebounds.
Johannes Voigtmann is married and a father of two, and his wife is a native of Munich.
