Musiala assists as Germany beat France 2-0
It was just the start to the year Germany would've wanted as they gear up for this summer's European Championship on home soil. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann named a Bayern duo in his starting line-up for the 2-0 success over France, with Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala occupying the right flank in Lyon. The DFB team got off to a lightning-fast start with Florian Wirtz hammering the ball into the roof of the net from distance after just seven seconds. It didn't take long for the Germans to score at the start of the second half, either.
Four minutes after the restart, Musiala cut through the French defence with a dazzling run, rounded goalkeeper Brice Samba after receiving the ball back from Wirtz and then teed up Kai Havertz, who just had to tap the ball home from the edge of the six-yard box. While Musiala enlivened the German attack, Kimmich stood up to France's star striker Kylian Mbappé at right-back. Thomas Müller then entered the fray in the 72nd minute. Bayern teammate Dayot Upamecano started for the hosts in the centre of defence. Germany play another friendly against Netherlands in Frankfurt on Tuesday (20:45 CET), while France take on Chile.
Laimer's Austria beat Slovakia 2-0
Konrad Laimer and the Austrian national side also celebrated a 2-0 win in their friendly against Slovakia on Saturday evening. Coach Ralf Rangnick included the FCB man in his starting line-up and watched as Christoph Baumgartner opened the scoring with the fastest goal in international history after just six seconds. Laimer came off at the break, and it was substitute Andreas Weimann who made it 2-0 in the 82nd minute. On Tuesday (20:45 CEST) Austria host Turkey in Vienna.
Davies and Canada book Copa América ticket
Alphonso Davies and the Canadian national team have qualified for the Copa América. A 2-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago on Saturday ensured their place in the competition. Bayern defender Davies played the full 90 minutes as second-half goals from Cyle Larin and Jacob Schaffelburg decided the contest.
Tel scores only goal, France U19s march on
Led by captain Mathys Tel, the French U19 side took a big step towards the European Championship on Saturday night with a 1-0 win against Netherlands in qualifying. The Bayern attacker scored the only goal of the game in the 52nd minute, again with a penalty. The youngster had previously netted from the spot three days earlier against Belgium, helping his team to a 2-0 victory. Tel was brought off after 89 minutes against the Dutch. France, who are top of their group with six points from two games, conclude the qualification tournament against Lithuania on Tuesday evening (19:00 CET).
De Ligt unused, Peretz not in squad, Kane departs
Matthijs de Ligt was an unused substitute in Netherlands' 4-0 win against Scotland in Amsterdam on Friday evening. The Oranje comfortably beat Germany's EURO group opponents thanks to goals from Tijjani Reijnders (40'), Georginio Wijnaldum (72'), Wout Weghorst (84') and Donyell Malen (86').
Israel will not be at this summer's EURO after losing 4-1 in the playoff semi-final to Iceland on Thursday evening. FCB goalkeeper Daniel Peretz was left out of the squad. The friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina that was due to take place in Sarajevo on Tuesday has been cancelled in light of the current security situation.
Bayern striker Harry Kane missed England's 1-0 friendly loss to Brazil because of the ankle injury he sustained in the game at Darmstadt, after which he returned to Munich early.
